Sauveterre de Rouergue

Local Attractions and Places to Visit

Sauveterre de Rouergue: Guided tours of the village are available - simply book at the Tourist Office. There are also a few bars, cafes and shops in the village.

Naucelle: This is the nearest town, 10 minutes by car, where there is a communal swimming pool and even an English Shop! The nearest supermarket is here, just on the outskirts of the town and with easy parking.

Rodez: This is the nearest major city, about a 25 minute drive away, with the Notre Dame Cathedral - one of the largest Gothic Cathedrals in Southern France. The city has the old town to wander through and also the more modern part filled with restaurants, shops and boutiques.

If you venture in other directions you could visit the great lakes of Levezou and Paraloup, the Tarn Gorges or the Marcillac or Gaillac vineyards.

The awe inspiring Millau Viaduct (the world's tallest bridge and featured in a race on Top Gear!) is only an hour's drive away and has a visitor centre explaining how the bridge was designed and built. While in this area of Aveyron, why not also visit the cellars in Roquefort and see how the famous cheese is made!

A must is a visit to the medieval towns of Conques, with its famed romanesque Abbey and Pilgrims' Bridge; Najac, with its fortress standing proudly on a rocky outcrop or Belcastle, a picture-postcard town dominated by its beautiful 15th century chateau.

There are local maps and also some leaflets and suggestions of where to go on in the Apartment, or have a chat with our Aunt Rosalind in the Apartment below - she will give you lots of ideas! Aveyron tourism has a great website in English and provides you with lots of information about what to do and where to go in the Region.
